I am Tony Berry, Emeritus (ie retired) Professor of Management, having been in university business schools in Manchester and Sheffield. Before that I was an aircraft engineer in UK and the USA. I am 72, marrried, a Reader for 33 years, ex Lay Chair of Deanery Synod, served on Diocesan Synod, Board of Finance, and Ministry committees. I have had wide ex-perience of international research and training, and consultancy to commercial, charitable and church organisations; also a trustee of several charities. I am a member of WATCH and support the liberal Catholics. I am concerned that we Christians are not grasping the nettles of reform as we struggle to bring the good news to our country.
The proposed reform of the House of Lords is a matter of current concern. Following the publication of the White Paper on the Reform of the House of Lords Tony Berry and April Alexander tabled the following PMM on June 15th 2011:
‘That this Synod requests that the Archbishops’ Council establish a working group with members of each House of General Synod to prepare the Church of England's official response to the Government’s consultation on the re-form of the House of Lords and that any such Church of England response should be tabled at General Synod in Feb 2012 for debate and approval’. Over 190 members signed the papers; a hot topic!
We considered that the package of reform in the White Paper was of great public interest and that it might impact on the Establishment of the Church of England and its constitutional position.
NB: A Submission from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Government’s Draft Bill and White Paper has been submitted and is available on the C of E website as GS Misc 1004. Ed
