"The English Parish Church through the Centuries:: this interactive teaching-aid CD-Rom is a highly impressive presentation from Christianity and Culture, a joint venture between the University of York and St John‘s College, Nottingham. The resource is multi-layered with mini-chapters on historic periods from the C7th to C20th, and settings to look at liturgy, social and political backgrounds in each period. Unfamiliar words can be ―clicked‖ to show their meanings and key church movements or personalities are explained in drop-down pages.
An extensive glossary, image library and reading list is backed up by case studies of dozens of churches with expert guides using video and recordings of church music through the centuries and contributions from 225 leading academics.
When I have used the CD-Rom as a teaching tool the most popular section has been the 3-D modelling which demonstrates the way in which a church building has evolved from an Anglo-Saxon single cell chapel through the Norman and Gothic to the C15th century with each century adding its own extensions, windows, arches, applied decorations and furnishings, both internally and externally.
